Heritage has a way of showing up differently in every South African home, whether it lives in the language spoken around the dinner table, the food prepared without needing to look at a recipe, the music that immediately takes you somewhere familiar or the traditions that have quietly travelled from one generation to the next. It can be found in what we wear, what we make, how we gather and the stories we continue to carry with us, and while those stories may look completely different from one home to another, together they form part of the wonderfully layered picture of what it means to call South Africa home. This September, that feeling will sit at the heart of our Pretoria Heritage Factory Sale, which begins on Heritage Day and brings our community together at Castle Gate for four days of beautiful finds, good company and a celebration of the many different things that connect us to home.
What Does Heritage Mean to You?
Ask a room full of South Africans what heritage means to them and you'll probably hear very different answers, because for one person it may be the smell of a meal their grandmother used to prepare, while for another it could be the sound of a familiar song, a phrase that only really makes sense in their home language or a tradition that has become so much a part of family life that nobody quite remembers where it began.
Perhaps that is what makes South African heritage so interesting. There isn't one story, one culture or one way of experiencing it, but rather countless histories, traditions and memories existing alongside one another and continuing to evolve as each generation decides what it wants to remember, reinterpret and carry forward.
Heritage Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate those differences while also noticing the wonderfully familiar things that somehow bring South Africans together, even when our individual stories are completely different.
And there may just be a little more of that idea coming from us this September.
Heritage Is Something We Carry Forward
Heritage doesn't only belong to the past, because much of what we consider part of our heritage continues to change, adapt and find new meaning in the way we live today.
We see this particularly clearly through craft, where skills can travel from one generation to another through teaching, observation and practice, while familiar materials and techniques continue to take on new forms. Something created using knowledge that has existed for generations can still feel completely at home in a contemporary space, reminding us that honouring where something comes from doesn't mean it has to remain unchanged.
At Mo’s Crib, that relationship between the familiar and the new is something we experience through the making of our pieces, where texture, colour, material and the human hand come together to create objects designed for the way we live now.
Perhaps heritage is not only about what we inherit, but also about what we choose to continue.
Bringing Our Pretoria Tradition Somewhere New
In many ways, this year's Factory Sale carries that same idea of holding onto something familiar while allowing it to evolve.
Our Pretoria customers have shared many Factory Sale days with us over the years, travelling out to shop, browse, discover unexpected pieces and spend time with the Mo’s Crib team, and while that familiar spirit isn't changing, this September we're giving the experience a completely new setting.
From 24–27 September 2026, the Pretoria Factory Sale is moving to Castle Gate Lifestyle Centre, where we'll be creating an outdoor shopping experience spanning more than 1,200m², giving you more room to explore, take your time and discover what catches your eye.
The first day also happens to be Heritage Day, which makes this new chapter feel particularly special because while we're changing where we gather, we're holding onto what has always made Factory Sale days memorable: the people who come, the conversations that happen between the aisles and the excitement of never quite knowing what you're going to find.
Wear What Heritage Means to You
On Heritage Day, we'd love to see Castle Gate filled with the colour, character and individuality of the people who make up our community, so we're inviting you to wear something that represents heritage to you.
That might mean traditional clothing connected to your culture, a fabric or colour that carries meaning, something that reminds you of where you come from or simply an expression of yourself that makes you feel most at home.
There isn't one picture we're hoping to create because that's precisely what makes the idea so special. We want to see different expressions, histories and traditions occupying the same space, reminding us that being South African has never meant looking or sounding exactly the same.
Different stories can still share a home.
A Factory Sale Made for Spending the Day
Of course, there will still be plenty of the Factory Sale experience our Pretoria community knows and loves, with selected homeware available at up to 75% off, four full days to browse and more than enough opportunity for those unexpected finds that somehow become the pieces you leave talking about.
Factory Sale days have also always been about much more than what eventually ends up in the shopping bag, because there is the friend who comes along “just to look” and leaves carrying something, the coffee break that turns into another walk around the sale and the moment you spot something you definitely weren't planning to buy but immediately begin wondering where it could live at home.
This time, we're creating even more room for those moments at Castle Gate, so bring your people, take your time and make a day of it.
This Heritage Day, We'll Meet at Castle Gate
As we move closer to the Pretoria Heritage Factory Sale, we'll be sharing more stories around heritage, home and the little things that make us who we are, while asking our team and our community to tell us what heritage means to them too.
Some answers may be rooted in family and tradition, while others might be funny, unexpected or wonderfully ordinary, but we're interested in all of them because there is something special about discovering just how differently we can experience South Africa while still recognising something familiar in one another.
Different languages, traditions, memories and stories, yet somehow, when they all come together, there is a feeling that needs very little explanation.
You could almost say there's no DNA, just RSA.
